Tranfering you domain name from GoDaddy

Domain Registration, hosting

I recently talked to someone who was very frustrated while trying to tranfer their domain name from GoDaddy.

So, in an effort to help, I spent several hours looking over GoDaddy’s site (which is a very busy place with lots of links) with much frustration.

In order to tranfer you domain name you must first get an EPP Code (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) from your present registrar.  This prevent fraudulent domain transfers and domain hijacking.

I decided to Google “epp godaddy” and found this great tutorial showing you how to get your EPP Code from GoDaddy. If you want to transfer you name from GoDaddy check it: http://www.meetarpit.com/how-to-get-epp-code-from-domain-registrar/

It is important for you to note in this helpful post that the EPP code can ONLY be sent to whomever is listed as the “Administrative” contact in the WhoIs database. Therefore, if your domain is private, you will need to cancel the privacy, wait up to 24 hours until the WhoIs updates the change, THEN request the code, otherwise you will not receive it. You will also need to be sure the email address is one you still have access to and if not, change it.

HOWEVER, do not change anything other than that address, even if all other contact info is inaccurate once you cancel the privacy and can see it. Changing registrant information caused a domain to “lock” for 60 days and it cannot be transferred during that time. This is a domain hijacking prevention measure approved by ICANN. It’s better to leave it incorrect and update the info at your new registrar after the transfer completes.
